Trinity

When you think of God, how is He pictured in your mind?

God the Father: He gets things going – it is He who does the creative planning – He is the one we want to open His arms and bear any burden or request we ask of Him. How do we picture God the Father? As a big bear of a person – a person with a long beard someone who points His finger at us and says – now – do as I say or how about “Just ask me” or if you are a parent, you know what you say to your children when they keep harping on the same thing – “all right – I’ll grant your request because you are constantly asking the same thing”. We ask of Him what we would ask our own father – help us, guide us on our job search, give us some direction – don’t leave us hanging – after all, we are dependent on Him.

When you think of the Lord – you think of God the Father – after all we do pray the prayer that His Son, Jesus, told us – it begins OUR FATHER – who art in heaven – hallowed be they name ………

When I pray – I ask God for his blessings – His gifts – direction in the path to be taken whether it is a new career or help in picking up the phone to make a hard call.

Then there is God the Son: When I think of God the Son – I think of Jesus who was sent by His Father to earth to be our brother, our friend, our companion. Jesus prayed to His father – He felt the same emotions we feel, He could share our pain, our worry, our feelings of discouragement and failure – but He never lost trust in His Father’s love and the strength which He knew He could always count on.

We can learn from our friend, Jesus, that no matter how dismal or discouraged we may be – God’s presence is not far from us. Jesus was one of us – He experienced our emotions. We like to invite Jesus to come and sit next to us and to be part of our meetings. He’s like our closest friend – someone whom we can tell our secrets to and who we can ask to intercede with His Father. Didn’t we do that when we were kids – we asked our siblings to talk to our dad – especially if it was something we really wanted and we knew that our brother or sister could “get out of Dad” what we wanted.

After all, Jesus was sent by His Father to be with us and guide us on our journeys – so sometimes we pray and ask Jesus – hey, will you talk with Your Father and ask Him for that job I want or an answer to my most deepest question?

When you stop and think about Jesus – it’s pretty exciting having a friend like Him. I invite Him to sit with me as I drive and sometimes I feel His presence so strongly that I reach out – thinking I am touching Him.

The Bible quotes Jesus as saying : "Ask the Father anything in my name and it will be given to you".

And finally – last but not least is God the Holy Spirit. He’s like the dobee – He does the work. Through Him the Father and Son are present and active in the world. Someone once said: If life is simply a matter of doing our best, there was no need for God to send the Holy Spirit to us. He’s like the “patriarch” sitting there with arms folded.

The Holy Spirit showers us with many gifts to accomplish God’s work – He gives us seven gifts: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord. He gives his gifts to us – to help us get closer to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

I think of the Holy Spirit as a grandfatherly sort of figure with tremendous powers to help bring out the best in me and us. He guides us continually as we go through our days. I know before something really important – a phone call or an interview or a meeting – I ask the Holy Spirit to be in my heart, my mind and on my tongue – so I will say the right words. He’s the “inner action” or the little push needed when I feel like stepping back.

So next time you think of God – how do you see Him?
